   1. Your passport

   It has to be valid for the whole time you are in the UK.

   • Is the photo page readable, with nothing cut off?

   • Does it still have blank pages?

   • Does the expiry date cover your whole trip? Check the rule on GOV.UK.

   • Have you included any page with a previous UK visa or stamp?

2. Not ready

   2. Evidence you can pay for the trip

   Usually bank statements. The question is whether someone reading them can follow where the money came from.

   • Is your name on every page?

   • Do they cover the period the guidance asks for? Check on GOV.UK.

   • Is there a large deposit? Write one line explaining where it came from, and include the evidence.

   • If someone else is paying, have you included their evidence and a letter from them?

3. Not ready

   3. Evidence of why you are visiting

   An invitation, a booking, a conference letter, a wedding invitation — whatever is true for your trip.

   • Does it name you?

   • Do the dates match the dates you are applying for?

   • If someone invited you, does their letter say who they are and where you will stay?

4. Not ready

   4. Evidence you will leave at the end

   Ties to where you live: a job, studies, family, a tenancy, a business.

   • Do you have something in writing, not just a statement that it is true?

   • Is it recent?

   • Does it match what you have said elsewhere in the application?

5. Not ready

   5. Anything about your immigration history

   A past refusal or removal usually has to be declared. Not declaring it is treated more seriously than the refusal itself.

   • Have you found the old refusal or removal letter?

   • Have you declared it where the form asks?

   • Have you spoken to a regulated adviser about it?
